CHEVRON B21-72-12

The Kevin Wilkins-owned B21-72-12 is unusual in that it is fitted with a 2-litre BMW engine. Debuting at the Nürburgring in Round 8 of the Interserie Championship Clemens Schickentanz qualified the Dahl-Kanal Racing-entered car in 13th spot in a field of 24 cars and finished 9th on aggregate following a 13th and a 6th in the two 7 lap heats. In the following Hockenheim round Schickentanz was 18th, a problem in Heat 1 saw a 23rd place 5 laps down but Heat 2 saw a big improvement to 9th.

The 28th September 1972 Autosport report of the Nürburgring round said "Clemens Schickentanz, German saloon car ace, found himself driving a new Chevron-BMW B21 sponsored by Dahl-Kanal Racing. The engine was the first 'customer' 2-litre BMW engine to be sold and not in a March chassis. The reason for this was that the head and injection were of Schnitzer design, who claims around 270bhp for this unit. Anybody can buy the unit for a modest £3750, the motor being produced with the full agreement of Jochen Neerspasch who after all does not really care who wins as long as it's a BMW. The head, also 4 valve, bears the Schnitzer one piece rocker cover while the injection trumpets are mounted on the left inside of the right side of the engine to suit the easier fitment into German saloon cars apparently.".

Historical Notes:
In 1972 the rolling chassis was bought by Jo Siffert Racing. It was sold on to Clemens Schickentanz and fitted with a Schnitzer BMW engine and FT 200 gearbox. First race was at the Nürburgring 24.9.72 European Interserie, this is reported in Autosport magazine 28.9.72. There was only one other B21 running a BMW engine in period, Dieter Quester's works car that was destroyed in a high speed crash making this the only original B21 running a BMW.

1974 - the car was purchased by G. Moritz who raced & hill climbed it around Europe until 1982 - At some point it was fitted with a 3.0l Porsche engine and FG400 gearbox. The German Wagenpass records events entered in this period.

1994 - it was restored by C. Schausberger and driven by Rolf Lamberty in the Supersports Cup until 1998.

The car was then bought by Murray Sinclair and exported to New Zealand (where the car was borrowed by Marcus Pye for one race).

The car was then bought by the current owner and returned to the UK. It has been restored to the original 1972 Dahl-Kanal livery and is now racing in the Orwell Supersports Cup.
